Walk Around Before The Pressure Starts
The best time to check a work vehicle is before the collection vehicle is on its way. Once the driver is outside, people rush. Tools are missed, paperwork stays in the glovebox, a key cannot be found, and the old van suddenly becomes everyone's problem.
Nelson work vehicle final checks are a short pause before the handover. They help a sole trader, small business or vehicle owner confirm that the van, pickup or work car is truly ready to leave.
Empty The Vehicle Like It Is Still Useful
Start with the cab. Check glovebox, door pockets, under seats, sun visors, centre console, mats and seat-back pockets. Remove receipts, fuel cards, chargers, staff items, customer notes, parking permits and personal belongings.
Then check the load area, boot, pickup bed or shelving. Remove tools, stock, straps, dust sheets, spare parts, rubbish, ladders, roof equipment and anything that belongs on the next vehicle. If fitted racking is staying, leave it empty enough to inspect.
Clear Branding And Business Identity
Look at every visible panel. Signwriting, old phone numbers, website addresses, magnetic signs, operator labels and branded stickers can all remain visible after the vehicle stops working. Decide what should be peeled, covered or scored through before collection.
Business identity also appears inside. Remove branded paperwork, forms, uniform items, sample packs, dashcams, trackers and customer information. A clean outside is not enough if the cab still carries sensitive records.
Confirm Authority And Paperwork
If the vehicle belongs to a business, confirm who has authorised disposal. Keep that note with the quote. If the V5C, service history, MOT failure sheet or finance notes are relevant, gather them before the vehicle leaves.
Save the registration, mileage if known, collection address, payment details, collection time and contact name. These records do not need to be complicated. They just need to be together so nobody has to search messages later.
Check Access One Last Time
Stand where the recovery vehicle will need to approach. Look for parked cars, gates, slopes, soft ground, narrow lanes, low branches, locked steering and anything that blocks loading. Confirm whether the vehicle starts, rolls, steers and has keys.
If another car needs moving, move it early. If neighbours or staff need warning, do that before the truck arrives. A final access check can prevent the most avoidable delays.
Take The Final Photos
Photograph the vehicle from the front, rear, both sides, dashboard, wheels, load area and parking position. Include damage, missing parts and fitted equipment. These pictures support the quote and create a simple record of what left.
After that, the handover should feel calm. The business items are out, branding is handled, access is clear and the paperwork trail is saved. The old work vehicle can leave Nelson without leaving a mess behind it.
If something changes after the final photos, say so before the collection arrives. A removed roof rack, found key, flat tyre or newly blocked driveway can all affect the plan. One clear update is much easier than trying to fix the problem at the kerb while a recovery driver is waiting.
