The Final Minutes Need Their Own Checklist
Safe handover on collection day is about the last few minutes before the car leaves. That is when people rush. The driver is outside, the road may be tight, the car may need winching, and the seller may just want the space back.
Slow it down. The vehicle is still yours to check until the handover is agreed. A simple sequence keeps the Nelson collection steady: confirm the buyer, confirm the car, confirm payment, remove belongings, get the receipt and then release the keys.
Check The Vehicle And Buyer First
Start with the registration. Make sure the collector has come for the right car and the right address. If there are two old cars at a property, or the vehicle is parked away from the house, this check matters.
Then confirm the buyer or company name against your messages. A recovery driver may be acting for the buyer, which is fine, but the collection should still make sense against the booking. If the driver gives a different company name or price, call the person who arranged the quote before moving forward.
Payment Comes Before Release
Check the payment amount before handing over keys. For scrap vehicles, expect a traceable payment method rather than cash. If a bank transfer is used, look at the amount, reference and status in your own account where possible.
If someone else is dealing with the driver, make sure they know the payment rule. They should not be talked into releasing the car because a screenshot is waved at them or because the driver says the office will sort it later.
Remove Belongings And Private Papers
Before the car is loaded, search it properly. Check the glovebox, centre console, boot, under seats, door pockets, sun visor and paperwork folder. Old receipts, insurance documents, house keys, tools, child seats and work items are often found only when the car is already on the truck.
If the vehicle is difficult to access, do the search before the recovery vehicle arrives. Once a non-runner is being moved, climbing around it can be unsafe or impractical.
Get The Receipt While Details Are Fresh
Ask for a receipt or collection confirmation that shows the vehicle, date, buyer and final price. If the receipt will be sent digitally, confirm where it is going. Save it with the transfer record and written offer as soon as it arrives.
A safe Nelson handover is not complicated. It is simply not rushed. When payment, vehicle details, buyer details and belongings have all been checked, the car can leave with fewer loose ends behind it.
If the collection happens in poor weather or on a busy street, do the paperwork and payment check away from traffic where possible. Safety still comes first. You can confirm the transfer, receipt and keys from the pavement or doorway before anyone starts working around the recovery vehicle.
If the vehicle is being collected from a workplace or garage, agree who will speak to the driver. Too many people around the car can create mixed instructions about keys, payment and paperwork.
