The User Is Not Always The Owner
Company vehicles create a different handover from a private family car. The person who drove it may have had the keys for years, but the business may own it, lease it or keep it on an asset list. Before scrapping, the collection needs to be authorised by the right person.
Company cars and ownership proof are especially important where the vehicle is parked at a Nelson unit, outside an employee's house, or behind a workshop. The collector needs to know the business has approved disposal, not just that somebody wants the car gone.
Confirm Authority Inside The Business
Start by asking who can approve the vehicle being scrapped. That might be a director, owner, fleet manager, office manager or another named contact. Get the instruction in writing, including the registration, collection address and who will meet the driver.

Work vehicles often carry more records than expected. There may be finance settlement paperwork, lease conditions, insurance notes, tracker agreements, maintenance records or internal asset numbers. These should be checked before the vehicle is treated as disposable.
If the vehicle has recently been written off, replaced or taken off the road, keep the relevant decision trail. The person arranging pickup should know whether the car is fully owned by the business and whether any third party has an interest in it.
Clear Work Items Properly
Company cars can hold sensitive material. Remove tools, customer paperwork, job sheets, fuel cards, parking permits, uniforms, phones, chargers, access fobs and branded items. Check the glovebox, boot, door pockets, under seats and any hidden storage.
If the vehicle is locked or the battery is dead, plan the belongings check before collection day. A business should not discover after pickup that a customer file, key card or expensive tool went with the scrap car.
Make The Handover Simple For The Driver
Choose one person to meet the collector. They should have ID, the business approval message, keys if available, access notes and the vehicle details. If the car is at a yard or unit, make sure gates can be opened and other vehicles can be moved.
If the car is away from the business address, explain why. For example, it may be at an employee's home after breaking down, at a garage after diagnosis, or in storage after being replaced. A clear explanation avoids doubt.
Keep The Business Record Together
After collection, store the quote, authorisation, collection message, payment information and any disposal paperwork with the vehicle file. If the accountant, insurer or director asks later, the business can show what happened.
Scrapping a company car should feel organised, not casual. Confirm authority, check the paperwork, clear work items and give the collector one clear contact. That keeps the Nelson pickup practical and traceable.
